Must a team have the lead to get the designated closer in the game? If so, how does one trick HAL into inserting your best pitcher when the score is tied?

That's a good question, and it can be really frustrating when HAL passes on your closer due to the tie score. I'm not sure that there is a way to ensure your closer gets in with the score tied. Myabe someone else can answer this...

The only way I can think of is to list your closer as closer AND set up guy under manager strategy.

That probably would not work either, since a tie is not a setup situation, but a "hold" situation...
There is no way to ensure what you are trying to accomplish. That is what makes it more realistic...how often do you see Rivera come into a game with a tie score? Maybe in the playoffs, but seldom any other time. A closer is designated to hold onto a lead and close the door. So I would use him in that capacity, and get some good R2's and R3's to hold the lead until you can get to him...

Actually, quite often over the years ... when at home and the score is tied in the 9th, he comes in to pitch the 9th and ususally the 10th ... since he can't get a save at home at that point.
