One batter Reliever usage

One batter Reliever usage

Postby nsmithmarrone » Wed Jul 18, 2007 11:16 am

Hey all - looking for some advice on strategy settings. I would like to have my extreme 7L,7R relievers come in for one or two batters before going to my primary setup man or closer. I have a strong setup man and a strong closer and good starters that I don't want to yank too early. I just want to use the extreme guys for one or two batters in between them. I could switch manager strategy to aggresive relief but I dont want him to yank the starting pitchers too early. I have set the extreme guys for avoid rightys or leftys as appropriate. It doesnt seem like it is possible to do this right because if the computer does bring them in he seems to leave them in too long. I would rather have the computer not bring the extreme guys in at all if hes going to leave them in too long. Is there a way to do this - it doesnt seem possible. Thanks.

I feel your pain. I will set a 9R bullpen guy to avoid leftys, put him on quick hook with usage set to aggressive and he ends up pitching to MORE leftys than righties? HAL, you are outta control !

There use to be threads on the old boards about this. I don't know if it ever came to a clear conclusion, but if I remember right...the advice was that you needed to carry 6 or 7 relievers to make the strategy work.

I don't think you can eliminate a RP from facing a batter on his weak side but you can reduce it a little.

What I've done is carry 6-7 RP as LA suggested. Set the hard L and hard R as - avoid x/1-2 innings max/quick hook/not before 6th(sometimes 7th).

Make sure you have a good setup & closer, a good long relieve & a mop up guy.

This should make sure they don't come in early and get the quick hook. Probably need to be in a pitcher's park so you whole BP doesn't get overused.

Stoney's points are exactly what I have used before. My best bullpens have come with a four man starting rotation and 7 or 8 relievers. That way, there is always someone before the set up and closer that fits well within a matchup. At least, that's how I feel about it. There weren't too many questions about why, say, Brad Hennessey was left in to face Adam Dunn when Scott Downs was ready to go.
