Substitution=Mass confusion

Game 2 Rocco Baldelli goes down for 8 games on a HBP.
I have Taveras as a substitute CF both ways.
Since Rocco needs a PR I would assume that Taveras is the choice.
Hal subs in Lane...a slower runner and a weaker CF'er
Please explain.....?
