4-man or 5-man rotation?

I don't know if I'd call Shea or Minute Maid "pitchers' parks." A pitcher's park is more like Petco or Kauffman, where hits -- and especially HRs -- are harder to come by.

The only one of the four big starters I've had is Santana, and he's pitched well for me ... although his record was lousy because I didn't hit for him. Among the SP*s, Schmidt has done best for me. Among 5-day starters, Peavy has been my favorite. But I've only had 8 teams in this set (although I've played two seasons on the computer version).

Aray, welcome to SOM online!

agree with Mo, Minute Maid and Shea are what we refer to as "extreme" parks, meaning that they heavily favor one side over the other in BPHR potential. In the case of Minute Maid, it favors right handed batters over left handed batters (1-4 for LH, 1-13 for RH). With this in mind, you will want a staff that is tough on right handers, but can be somewhat lax vs lefties, especially where bphr's are concerned, since in MM, most of these will turn into long flyball outs.

In looking at your pitching staff, it looks more like a Shea staff, with predominantly lh starters. I would revamp, and look for starters that are right handed. The reason is simple, most right handers do not hit right handed pitching as well as they do left handed pitching. Guys like Garcia, Westbrook, Pavano, Maddux, etc (on the lower end)...are good choices here. If you want a lefty, a reverse lefty (Pettitte) would work well here.

On offense, you do not look too bad, and have the right idea by loading up on righties. Ortiz is ok, decent natural power vs righties, and will make people hesitate a bit to throw a cheapo righty at you! Look for a guy that is right handed, and hits righties well, since with so many rh batters, you will see alot of them! A. Ramirez is a great value here, Beltre on the expensive end, but same idea. Jeff Bagwell (with a platoon) fits well here also....

To answer your initial question, do I prefer a 4 or 5 man rotation, it depends on the situation. But I would say in general, 4 game starters are a better value than the 5 game starters in this years set, especially at the higher end. As opposed to the 2003 set, where I felt the 5 game starters were a better value. :)

Good luck, and have fun!

A. Jones, Jeter and D Roberts will all disappoint you at the plate. You don't need all three of those relievers either. You need more Offense. It looks like your only spending money on 6 hitters and Jones and Jeter are not worth it. YOur in a hitters park so get more hitters.

[quote:71377e82b5]Looking at my new league, I've got two Sheas and a Petco in my division; and add another Shea, two Comericas & Coors each, another Minute Maid, and one Tropicana and a Skydome, and I tried to make some adjustments. Still thinking that I may not have enough lefty hitters, but the only ones are either too pricey for me, or they don't produce enough offense to justify their defensive liabilities.

I would not be overly concerned about the other parks. Remember, you will play 81 games in Minute Maid, so the Shea teams will be at a decided disadvantage vs you. I would trade in either Glavine or Buerhle, if you feel you need a lefty, and get another right hander. You could get some cheapo lefties for the Shea guys (Capuano types), but you really need (and should!) to dominate at MM....
