I've been on both sides of this, and have come to the following theory(?) on what determines your ability to win in the playoffs.
The following lists the DO's and DO NOT's of an SOM playoff team:
First, the DO NOT's...
1. Do NOT win 100 games
2. Do NOT have the best overall record in the league
3. Do NOT go wire-to-wire
4. Do NOT get matched up with the wildcard from your own division
5. Do NOT win the first 2 games of a divisional playoff matchup
Finally, the DO's, any one of which will work, but the more the better...
1. DO squeak into the playoffs as the wildcard
2. DO have the worst overall division winning record
3. DO lose the regular season series to your playoff opponents
[b:a3c9508989]IMPORTANT SUBCLAUSE TO BOTH:[/b:a3c9508989]
Never, ever, ever, tempt HAL and the SOM gods by bragging about your team, some incredible stats you're putting up, or talk smack when on top. That is a sure-fire way to tear the space-time continuum, and bring 7 years bad luck to any team you manage...you might as well retire your account and start another.
And finally, the range of emotions you will go through, should you have a team that falls under the DO NOTs:
:D "Yeah, I have the best team in the league!"
 "Ha ha, I won the first 2 playoff games, I'm running away with it!"
NOTE: Subclause goes into effect here as well
:? "Ummm...just lost games 3 and 4...up to the rubber game now.."
 "What the f***!! I lost?? How the heck did that happen?!!"
  "I should have listened to keyzick's playoff theory!!"
