Our preseason coverage site for our official re-creation of the 1986 baseball season is now live at:

To remind you what this is all about, we'll be replaying the 1986 season, game by game, using the SOM Online engine, with 26 prominent members of the media/baseball world managing the original rosters through the original schedule. Basically, we want to see if we can repeat history, or better yet, rewrite it. What's even cooler is that we'll be covering the season as if it were 1986 all over again, with new content written by our managers, AND actual articles from the original Sporting News magazine from 1986, as if they were hot off the presses.

Why are we doing this? Besides the fact that it'll be a heck of a fun time, we'd simply like to bring a lot more attention to Strat-O-Matic and hopefully infuse our community with new managers. With the talent that we have slated to manage the 26 teams (including one current and one former Major Leaguer, prominent radio hosts, and popular writers), we think that just about anyone who's interested in baseball will be talking about us this offseason.

Note that esteemed SOM Online managers [b:66fd0fc7d9]wjanssen[/b:66fd0fc7d9] and [b:66fd0fc7d9]Sykes25[/b:66fd0fc7d9] are representing the community as the managers of the A's and Padres, respectively. They will be bringing their seasoned SOM talents to the party, as well as providing running commentary throughout the season.

We hope that you'll find this project as fascinating as we do. To all of you in the community inclined to pitch in, I invite you to 1) comment on the articles from the 1986 Sporting News magazine that you find interesting (we'll be posting new ones everyday during the preseason!), and 2) post your own blog entries about anything related to the '86 season or this replay (go to http://www.sportingnews.com/blog to start your blog if you haven't already), and tag your entries [b:66fd0fc7d9]1986strat[/b:66fd0fc7d9] to get them to show up automatically on the front page of the coverage site under the "Community" section!

Looking at the schedule the regular season doesn't end until May 4 of 2008. Will Curt Schilling still be on the Red Sox then? If TSN wants to complete this season prior to releasing it we will have a long time to wait. My guess is that they want to let this league get started good and create a big buzz and will release the game to us prior to the end of this season but who knows?

Interesting that these cards don't have the balance for each card listed (4R, 2L, etc). Also TSN would first have to put a price on each card for our purposes.

I think that if Curt can over come Hal's propensity for mishandling the pen, mainly limiting the use of the poor cards and funneling innings to the top 3 starters and the 2-3 good RP's, then the Sox re-write history and win it all. The ghost of Bill Buckners knee's decrees it!

Why do some teams have players from other rosters? Red Sox are carrying Mike Trujillo Seattle 86?

Rosters are set with most players aligned with their team which they started the 1986 season with. For players who played on multiple teams, they are likely listed with the team they had the most AB's with.

Bernie did do some shuffling I believe to make sure each team had enough options (and cards) to choose from.

25 man roster requirement right now. I could cut down to 9 and play the system; however, I will start with 11 pitchers for now in the spirit of things.
