This is my first attempt at Petco and I'd like some advice from anyone who has had some success there. Thanks for your help.

jg- All you have to do is go to the "front office" and click on your team link that is listed next to whatever team you are playing against in your 1st 3 games. Your team will come up and you should notice a few numbers at the end of the link in the address bar. Cut and paste that with the numbers attatched and you should be ok.

As far as your line-up goes.....It looks pretty good. I like the pop you have in Ortiz and Manny. Ortiz will hit anywhere. Manny's numbers will be ok but he will still hit in Petco.

Love the Pierre/Ichiro at the top and that makes for above average defence in the OF. I like a -1 or better arm in CF but that's not too much of a concern.

I don't like Gload or Glaus.

Gload - I would rather go with a better platoon or a high injury risk with better numbers. The ideal guy would be David Newhan. Love him in Petco. Defence would take a hit but you are srtong up the middle and at your other 2 OF positions.

Glaus- run and don't look back!!! Look for a Bill Mueller/Edgardo Alfonzo platoon. Even if you don't get them....look to save some $$ and write this off as a posotion you won't get much production from.

I don't know your pitching and don't know if you are pre or post waivers. I don't know if you have $$ left or not. All that info we would see on the link. That would help.

Hopefully that works. I do have some extra $$ leftover ($1.26M). The season doesn't start until Monday so there is still time to do stuff.

My take....

I don't think your pitching is strong enough for a petco team. I like to see at least one stud (sheets is my favorite here), and a nice supporting cast. Look for Leiter, bonderman, those types with walks but few hits. Martinez is a good one in petco.

Your hitting

C - Kendall - Good of course
DH - Ortiz - I do not like David here. Not enough natural hrs for me. Would be nice to have someone like Belte, with lots of HRS.
1B - Gload - Agree with woody, poor fit here. He needs to be in a park like Shea, Miller, etc where he will see alot of LH pitching to be effective. Look for Snow here, with a good back up.
2B - Kennedy - he does not hit well even in hitters parks. someone who fits nice here is jimenez, decent d, and good obp derived mostly from walks, and pretty cheap
SS - Visquel is fine, i like izturis better here, but visquel works
3B - Glaus - i must disagree with my friend woody5 here. I like Glaus in petco. Lots of natural hrs. but you will need a good backup, which you have in freel.
LF - Ramirez - he will be very disappointing for you here. Very BP dependent. I have seen guys do well with J.Rivera here, good obp derived mostly from singles, not walks.
CF - Pierre - I do not like a + arm in CF in a pitchers park, esp a +3....I would look to improve your D here...kotsay is my fav, but he is probably gone. Look for a better arm here.
RF - Suzuki - Fantastic for petco

Luckyman had a good thread on petco awhile back...

I will just share my experience with Petco. First team, I picked all great defensive players and couldn't get on friggin' base! So I started dropping and things only got worse. Finished ten games below .500. I did have Ben Sheets who was like 18-13 and Eaton and Milton pitched well too. Oh yeah...there were two OTHER Petco teams in my division as well.

Next Petco team I finished 89-73 and lost game seven of the finals. The team really picked it up when I added Frank Thomas but wonder of wonders...he got injured for almost the entire playoffs. I had Gordon as setup, Nathan to close and not really any spectacular SP's. I'd like to think it was my skill at the game but I know that one or two of the other teams in my division dropping/adding a lot contributed to my success. I always hope for a division that does a lot of that.

Anyways, I love extreme parks...will probably play in Petco again.

Thanks you all for the good advice. Seems like I have some tweaking to do!

Okay, I've done a lot of tweaking. I still have more to do. After thinking harder about Manny and Ortiz I decided to move them. Here is where I am now:
http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/2005/team/team_other.html?user_id=41761

I am going to focus in improving my pitching now by using Burnitz. That would give me 5.6 mil towards that.

My new Lineup:

vs RHP:

DH Pierre
C Kendall
RF Suzuki
3B Glaus (I have Freel on my bench)
CF Kotsay
1B Nevin
LF Gload
SS Vizquel
2B Jimenez

vs LHP:

LF E. Young
RF Suzuki
1B Gload
DH Nevin
3B Glaus
C Kendall
SS Vizquel
2B Jimenez

I could use Pierre instead of E. Young against reverse LHP.

I've heard the comments about replacing Gload but am not sure. He seems to fit nicely in my Park since he has such a high BA.

I've also read about the importance of a good closer in Petco, any suggestions? I am thinking Hoffman isn't suited for Petco. Also, should I grab a super reliever as my closer?

Thanks again for the help.

With weak 3,4 & 5 starters, you will need a fairly deep pen. Hoffman is good as a pure closer, but I would personally like to see a better setup guy than you have. Lots of good ones, but someone who can really close them up until you get to hoffman, or finish the job themselves. What relievers on the high end are available??
