Well, it is a very general statement. I don't see anything wrong with looking at stats, just don't take them to seriously too early. A good player will usually do well over the course of the season. Stick to your guns. If after 80-100 games your team is floundering, sometimes you need to make changes. But another good quote from that thread goes something like...
"rarely do you make a team better by lowering the value thru add/drops"
The lesson here?? Do your homework prior to the draft, adjust as well as you can prior to the start of the season, and then, live with your decisions, and trust them!
If you find you are not very successful, then post your team on the boards before the season starts, you will get tons of good advice that might steer you in a positive direction!! :)
