Is it too risky to have a guy like Phil Nevin as your only backup C? I have Kendall as my starter so he shouldn't miss too many games if he gets hurt.
I just hate wasting .50 to roster a defensive backup but am nervous about having Nevin behind the plate.

One of the advantages to having a nearly indestructible catcher like Jason is that you can pick a backup who primarily plays other positions or is horrible defensively such as Munson.

Yeah, but what do you do when you drafted I-Rod, thinking he was indestructible, and Chad Moeller for .51 only to have I-Rod come up injured for 31 of the first 42? I have contemplated dropping I-Rod and Moeller for two midlevel platoon catchers and then use the extra money to improve my bullpen. Is it too early for this dramatic move?

Only Kendall, Lopez, and Wilson have 600 plate appearances in the 2005 set. Every other catcher is a 15 game injury risk. Thats what is meant when folks say indestructable.

In the right situation, I would grab a guy like Nevin as my back up catcher/1B/DH as long as I had Kendall behind the plate every day. If you have a guy back there who is only going to miss three games at a time with their injuries, that C-5 defense with a +3 arm is still going to be rough when you have to use it, but not nearly as bad as if the starter went down for 15 games. That, and it allows you more flexibility elsewhere.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

The best deals are the catchers who get hurt a lot.
