2005 AL-NL Theme: Draft Completed, Ready to Start

Postby MoCrash » Fri Nov 25, 2005 7:43 pm

I’ve participated in a similar theme in Back to the ‘80s and think it would be fun in 2005, although probably not quite as wild or confusing, and offers a different twist for those who want to do something new (maybe it’s been done, but I haven’t seen it yet). Claim two clubs, one AL and one NL, and use players exclusively from those clubs, with a few exceptions. [b:c6ae375442]Each team's roster must have a minimum of 20 players from the two clubs drafted.[/b:c6ae375442]

[b:c6ae375442]Franchise draft:[/b:c6ae375442] $80 million cap without waivers, DH, password. Serpentine draft order determined through lotto numbers (Pick 3, night drawing where applicable, high to low) of the state declared upon sign-up. Each owner selects selects one team in each of two rounds, one from each league. If an NL team is picked first round, an AL team must be chosen in the second, and vice versa. You must chose the ball park from either of the teams selected. The name of your club will indicate which teams are yours, with the city determined by the ballpark chosen (For example, if you selected the Cardinals and Royals, and wish to play in Kauffman Stadium, then your team is the Kansas City Cardinals; if its Padres and White Sox and you play in Petco, its the San Diego White Sox). Divisions will be determined geographically according to home parks.

[b:c6ae375442]Free agents:[/b:c6ae375442] A four-round live draft will be held following the team draft for non-franchise free agents (those FAs not members of the drafted teams), after which all non-franchise FAs will be ineligible. The serpentine draft order will be determined by lotto numbers (high to low) on the night after the team draft is completed. [b:c6ae375442]If a player from a drafted franchise is released, he must remain a free agent unless reacquired by that franchise[/b:c6ae375442] (for example, if the Kansas City Cardinals do not draft or decide to release Mike Sweeney, he may not be signed by another team and would be considered to be in the franchise’s minor league system). [b:c6ae375442]This includes players who were acquired by trade.[/b:c6ae375442] (e.g. Kansas City Cardinals trade Sweeney to Cleveland Padres, who release him after the auto-draft or during the season. Sweeney's rights then reveret to the Kansas City Cardinals).

[b:c6ae375442]Auto-draft:[/b:c6ae375442] You may only select players from the two teams you drafted. There is no restriction on how many players from either club have to be included (obviously, the Kansas City Cardinals would have more Cardinals than Royals). You may also include up to four non-franchise FAs, selected by live draft before auto-draft. At least 20 players must be from the two clubs drafted.

[b:c6ae375442]Waivers:[/b:c6ae375442] No waivers.

[b:c6ae375442]Trades:[/b:c6ae375442] Trades are allowed at any time without restrictions, except those noted above (i.e. 20 franchise player minimum). The only way players from drafted teams may be moved to another franchise is by trade. All such trades must be announced to league members through the league’s message center.

The only thing I have against rules wise is the trading. I just dont think you should be able to trade away franchise players, kinda goes against the theme in my opinion. Non-franchise players is fine for trading.

I thought about that, but the reason I think trades would be desirable is because, unlike the '80s set where players played for -- and hence would be available to -- multiple teams, the 2005 players are bound to one teams. To bar trading may be overly restrictive to owners trying to form their teams, since their pool of available players is so thin.

Thanks for signing up. Your is a negotiable issue. If others who sign up are strongly in favor of barring trades of franchise players, then I'd consider changing that rule. Having seen how the theme works in my '80s AL-NL league, I decided to include trades ... at least initially.
