Pitching Help at Shea

Pitching Help at Shea

Postby chase1918 » Thu Dec 01, 2005 8:03 pm

Thinking about using Madritsch as a reliever. Don't ask me how I got Schmidt I had Santana first on my list and someone picking behind me got him ( along with the Unit).
I am thinking about sticking with Schmidt and having him along with Lilly. Willis and rotating Drese and Alvarez (who can relieve occasionally).

Looking for any suggestions.
Chase

Madritch seems like a lot of money for a reliever and i dont love drese here. I had Maroth at shea go 22-5 for me and i have seen Mulder do well also your team looks real strong

Interesting idea...I imagine you'd use Madritsch to setup BJ and Speier? Hmmm a setup guy that can go for 3 innings without a prob...sounds good to me. I have used Madritsch in Shea as a starter with good results...I agree that it is a bit expensive but sounds like an interesting experiment...I'd try it...how can we learn something new if we keep doing the same old tricks eh?

I think your pen is too unbalanced & Madritsch is not a great Shea pitcher because no BP HR to RHB. If you have major hitter parks (Coors, Comiskey) in your div, ok, use him, but I like Schmidt-Lilly-Willis as the core of your rotation. Try to trade Madritsch to someone in Coors and pickup a cheap reverse RHP like Benoit to start against lefty/sw teams, and a hard righty with BP HRs to RHB like Rob Bell to pitch vs RH teams.

You can then use the $$ to upgrade the pen where I would never ever use Spier in Shea. I love Duchscherer in Shea for his R3 and ability to get out RH pretty well. I also like Erasmo Ramirez a lot to get out RHB.

You also should pick up someone to platoon with Morneau at 1B, you are weak vs LHP now & need a lefty-killer there, someone with medium BP HRs & lots of natural doubles. In fact if Renteria available I would upgrade over Guzman if possible. G Anderson a waste of money on this team if you are going with lineups like this:

vs RH
Kotsay
Wilkerson
Drew
Ortiz
Morneau
Figgins
Hudson
Guzman/SS
Hall/C

vs LH
Kotsay
Wilkerson
Drew
(Renteria if available)
1B platoon - lefty killer
Figgins
Hudson
Ortiz
Hall/C

not that I'd have anything to add after a Shea pro like qk, but I agree and I would think, even if Madritsch was suited for Shea (which he isn't, high overall WHIP for Shea comparitively to other possibilities), I think to invest 5M for a middle reliever that you're hoping HAL will use correctly is playing to the wrong odds.

Theoretically, it all sounds good til HAL refuses to use him the way you expect. Stick with the safer alternative of 2 traditional solid setup guys in the 2-3 mil range (yes, Duchy would be great here...if no Erasmo then Cormier may be OK too) and a C6 closer...or go with a stud R2/C5/6 guy and wear his arm down to a nub with a few supporting cast folks.

For getting lefties out if that becomes an issue and need a cheapie, folks like Halsey and Franco are economical if you have enough relievers to quick hook em.
Yes Speier is a great value in some parks, but not Shea.

If you can't afford Bell, I like Ramon Ortiz. A bit cheaper and tougher on righties...

Thanks for all the help I picked up Bell and Capuano now I am working on Speier. I need a shut down reliever vs righties who can close when called upon. I'm not sure how HAL will react to Midritch but I am monitoring him as a reliever in another league and he seems to be getting alot of innings.

Chase, I'm in that league and I noticed the guy (in Coors) using Madritsch in relief. It's an interesting strategy, but considering Madritsch as a reliever, he's got over 18 million in RP salary on that squad and I think that's too much. I don't think the strategy works in the long run, at least not in his case. I'll watch it though. I'm always willing to steal a good idea.

That league is frustating me. I took basically the same team that just went to the finals and tried upgrading from varitek to pudge and guillen to sheffield but so far it has backfired. I cut Madritch, got cold feet on the idea.
