When to cut an injured player?

When to cut an injured player?

Postby RICHARDMILTER » Tue May 27, 2008 11:56 pm

I have 72 games left to play and Mark Texiara is hurt for 14 games. Should I cut him right now for Adrian Gonzalez?

I would say no. When a player is injured for close to half of the remaining games it would be worth the drop but if you are in the playoff hunt and Big Tex has been playing well then he is a big reason you are doing as well as you are. Keep him, you'll need him later. You still have about a half a season left to play.

This question brings back memories of the old boards. I believe it was Pennegray that did some statisical analysis on this very subject. Sadly, my memory fails me. Maybe an old timer actually has that thread saved in his archives somewhere.

My backup 1st baseman if I do not cut Tex for Gonzalez is; Mark Teahan. He has a a great card for a backup. He has a .351 OBP. Texiaria is one of the reasons I am 51-39, 1st place. But I do not want to lose 10 out of the next 15, fall out of 1st place, and then have him get hurt again. I have until 10:00 pm to decide. Does anyone else have an opinion??? THANK YOU,

Typically I don't but them unless it's right before the trading deadline. At that point, they are missing almost half the remaining games. Otherwise, assuming they are playing well, I don't cut them.

now if they are playing like crap and get injured, then say bye bye

Using a very simplistic approach I would say after game 132 is played you have less than 20% of your schedule remaining therefore holding on to an injured player for 15 games AFTER game 132 is played is less optimal than taking the 20% salary cap loss. If you are in a league with 1 10% salary loss then I would keep the injured player no matter what.

However with a player like Tex I would rather ride an injury and have him on my lineup come playoff time.

It depends on if you are likely to make the playoffs or not. If not, definitely drop him. If you are in a tough race, I'd probably drop him depending on who's available. If you have a big lead, hold on to him.

The key is calculating how many of your remaining games he will play, as compared to the 20% salary drop.

You have a decent backup.

I miss Luckyman's posts. Anyone know why he's not around anymore?

Thanks for all the input!!!!! I have a two game lead for the division. The player I can pick up if I drop Tex, is Adrian Gonzalez. I still have not decided what to do. Gonzalez has a real nice card, but Tex is part of the reason I am in first place(with 72 more games to play). I did invest in a good backup(Mark Teahan) knowing that Tex would probably get hurt. It is a standard 20% loss, for dropping a player, league. Thanks for all the help!!! Are there any more suggestions???? Thanks a bunch,
