how does HAL choose RP?

does HAL choose RPs based on just the quality of the pitcher and appropriateness for the situation, or are the RP's IP totals involved? I have a suspicion that if you have an 80-innings dud, HAL might be likely to choose that pitcher more often than a 40-inning stud. Any opinions?

I'm just wondering because I'm preparing for a season, and my bullpen has mostly 40-inning guys (except for closer). I just picked up Quantrill for the bottom of the pen, but I'm worried that because he pitched 80-plus innings HAL will choose him far more than I would, rather than choosing Saenez, for example, who is far more effective but only pitched 40-plus real-world innings. I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed HAL basing his (hers?) decisions based somewhat on real-life IP?

Well a lot of it is based on what you've told HAL to do with your pen...markings on individual pitcher cards not to come in before certain innings, avoiding right or lefthanded batters, etc...or on your manager settings, who to set up, who to close against wich side...many of the complaints about HAL here relate to how those individual or manager settings weren't followed when perhaps they should have been...but for the most part you do have a good role in determining these things. If your starter tires and the next guy is a big lefty stud, HAL will look for a pitcher balanced against lefties...if available. Up to you to assemble a pen with good options, and then to fine tune things with your settings...

thanks for the tip hechojazz...
I use no settings on my RP...just try and get quality arms that fit the park and have all contingencies covered in my roster selections...I just try to give HAL all the weapons he might need and then just sit back and pull my hair out...
so in your experience HAL chooses the best pitcher for the situation, without regard for the real-world innings pitched totals?...
so Quantrill won't be overused while Saenez sits?...
anymore feedback from anyone on this would be great...it's of primary importance in building a roster to us to know how HAL thinks, and why certain decisions are made...I would assume there's no dice rolls involved in strategic decisions, and that all the decisions are arrived at through analysis of various statistical factors...but that's just an assumption; I really don't know what the process is...it would just be very helpful to get a solid grasp on what factors are being taken into account...
looking forward to a fun season in a a league with a half dozen Coors and two Ameriquests...

At its most basic without all the settings discussed above, HAL does have a tendancy to balance worload depending on real life IPs.
As others have stated, the settings change that as well as game situations which override it. But for example, if you have 2 R2/3R RHP relievers and rp A is better than B but B has a lot more IPs, B over time will likely get more innings. Just my observation without any hard stats behind it.

After several leagues, I think I know what HAL does . . .
- Has a beer
- Reads manager settings
- Has an other beer
- disregards them because you were wrong. After all the he's much smarter than a simple human
- Has a beer
- checks who is coming up
- Has a beer
- tries to remember why he was checking who was coming up
- Has a beer
- takes the pitcher who spinning the slowest
- Has a beer
