need assistance deciphering HAL logic

Postby JEFFFESPERMAN » Mon Jun 23, 2008 7:04 am

have J.J. Putz designated as my preferred closer and setup man in the manager strategy section and I the "avoid using before the 8th inning" option checked on his personal settings. Why then did HAL leave Angel Guzman in to pitch the last 5 innings of a tie game when Putz was rested and available in the bullpen?

Well you were never in the lead so you couldn't "set up" a save or "save" the game therefore your set up or closer would not be called upon unless you were running out of pitchers.

No one can explain all of HAL's moves but it doesn't seem crazy in this instance. Guzman was pitching good so why take him out? If HAL did take Guzman out when he had not allowed a run and your set up man blew it you might be saying "Why did HAL take out Guzman who was pitching great". Also, what if Putz was brought in in the 8th inning and pitched two innings of shutout ball while your offense still didn't score. Another pitcher might then have been brought in and you could say "Why did HAL burn up Putz before a save or set up opportunity"?

You didn't do anything wrong in your settings and I don't really think HAL did anything wrong either in this instance.

Thanks for the analysis. I've not been playing the TSN game that long, so I still have much to learn.

HAL logic...

That's got to be one of the best oxymorons of all time.

I take offense.

HAL's logic really mirrors the "older" Advanced SOM rules used by folks in pen and paper games before the TSN website was even born.

Think like a computer for a minute. Guzman comes in to a tie game. As a computer, I will perform a task until a new condition is met. What is a condition that will cause me to take an action on a RP?

- lead change
- pitcher fatigue
- PH for pitcher and double switch to try to get a run in (not applicable here, but often the cause of MANY a HAL bullpen complaint on these boards)

RP get fatigued when they either...
- give up a combo of 3 hits/BB in the same inning
- give up a combo of 4 hits/BB in 2 consecutive innings
- come into a game after pitching 2 straight games, which has them enter the game as fatigued, regardless of above conditions.

When the above conditions are met, HAL will consider taking action if no other factors have changed. Thus all of what LMB had to say about the tie scored etc is 100% accurate.

Think of HAL as a 1 lane highway and he can only let one car go down the road at a time. Since HAL is playing both sides of the fence on offense and defense, he has to follow a strict program logic of A then B followed by C, but if E happens, jump to H.

Funny thing about your box score is that people think the HBP counts towards fatige logic, but it doesn't. Personally, SOM should alter their logic and make it count.

P.S. DeanPSC does an outstanding job of HAL explaining w/o even knowing it because of his knowledge of SOM board game rules.
