what does "slow hook" really mean?

I'm sure there have been previous forums that covered this topic, but I'm not privy to them. Can anyone provide a simple explanation of the advantages and potential disadvantages of using this option for starting pitchers?

The advantage is that the SP will pitch more innings, and/or avoiding a bad bullpen. The disadvantage is that he may be left in when tired and thus not at 100% efficiency, and/or left in to "work through" a situation where a reliever might be the better strategic bet.
