Any opinions on Bill James Win Shares?

Has anyone out there had any success using Win Shares to guide roster selections? Or lack of success?

Just wondering. I'm very new at this on-line Strat thing, although I have played the board game. And, I try to keep up with Bill James' writing. I don't always agree with him, but he has some interesting ideas and he's never boring.

Bill's stuff is great, and I think winshares is one of his best innovations. It's not perfect, of course, but so far as I understand it it's innovative and useful. The problem with trying to use it for strat is, there's no way to tell whether or not the player qualities detected by winshares are picked up by the cards.

I think looking at the cards, studying the cards, Diamond Dope and spreasheets studying the cards, as opposed to the player-seasons they represent, is the best way to go. So far as I can tell.

The Strat Ratings Book is likely the best way to go. I don't have the disk, but that must be nice to sort stats with.

Not win shares per se, but I do create some sort of OPS-adjusted for defense and stadium rating when selecting players.

It's fairly easy to do if you already have the Strat Ratings floppy disk from Strat.

Let us in on the formula then Luckyman! Any help to evaluate players are always welcome.

How does one get a copy of this disk? Is there one for the 1969 game (my favorite)?

My formulas are probably already in the Strategy section somewhere (actually, I seem to remember to have posted it after one of your inquiry, shanky81, am I wrong?).

If it's not there, I'll post it there...

For the disk, not sure about 1969. You have to look for it in the product section of www.strat-o-matic.com

You are correct Luckyman. I read your post quickly and didn't realise you had let me know the formula. Thanks
