Suggestions for Game Improvement for the 2008 Set

Postby uncle ny » Thu Sep 18, 2008 9:27 am

I have two suggestion for the next set, one for the game in general and one exclusive to the online version. The second might be deemed a little petty, but the "problem" has occurred in my last three tour events.

1. Bring pitcher's injury history from the season into the game. In the traditional methodology, we can expect Joba Chamerbin to have a great card, be e starter/reliever, and perhaps carry a price tag of $7.5mil. I'd like to add some realism into the equation and price him with his true value to the Yankees ($4.5mil?) but have a real risk that he'll sit out half the season.

2. A pet peeve of mine in the online game is the additional power afforded the teams in the West. In perhaps 3 out of every 4 leagues in which I play there's one team that holds up the autodraft for a long time after the 11th team is in. For tournament play, I would be in favor of having the option when setting up the league of excluding the 12th team from waivers for 24 hours if it is entered more than 24 hours after the 11th team.

Nice thought...but it'll never happen.

I'd like to see the teams drafted IMMEDIATELY after the 12th. team enters. How tough could that be? I bet it would be easier on their servers if it all wasn't run at the same time.

While I think your idea has great merit, it really is not up to TSN(I would think). They are just using the rules Strat-O-Matic has taken years to almost perfect. And hardly anything is perfect(except perhaps Natalie Portman). Pitchers should probably be rated for injuries, but it would be up to SOM to do so. It is still a good idea.

Your other idea, I do not quite understand, but since I was not in the tournament that is probably why. Next year I will join the tourney! :D

Improvements for the SOM Engine and 2008 set.

Postby jgnazzo » Sat Sep 20, 2008 7:27 am

1. Have more options for Team Salary caps. Say 60 to 250 million in increments of 5 million. (i.e. , you could set up a league with as Salary cap of 125 million.)

2. Have more options for required number of relief pitchers. (i.e., 4,5,6,7, or 8)

3. Have the option to set up the league to play single, 2, 3, or 4 games daily.

4. Have the league owner have the option to create leagues with more teams. Say (12, 16, 20, 24, 28, or 32)

5. Have the league owner be able to select waiver fees and effectivity. (i.e, 0 for first X games, 0-10 percent for next Y games, 0 - 25 for next X games)

6. Have the option of getting a rebate (Say 5-10 percent of Salary cap) at the mid-point of the season. Allows teams to upgrade team, and keep interest, without severe penalty.

I think there was talk about they now had the ability to create larger leagues. However, there is a problem with that. It can be frustrating now not getting key players you want in the draft. With more teams, the likelihood of not getting who you want grows exponentially.

Perhaps in ATG4 it would work since there are so many more players to choose from. Or maybe live drafts where you can pick someone else you want if the guy you wanted is taken.

There would have to be a lot of interest shown, though, to make it worth their time.

I don't understand the comment regarding the power of the West teams and don't know what power is especially afforded the 12th team. :?

If anything, I think the 12th team has a disadvantage. The twelth team cannot make any changes to his autodraft rankings once he hits submit. Everyone else has time to go back out of the league and make autodraft changes if they find a different player they would rather have. I discovered this the hard way being the twelth team in my last latest league.

You make an excellent point! I just noticed a league with 11 managers, and decided to join, but after submitting my draft card, I realized latter I could not switch my park or make changes to the draft order.

I believe the power he is referring to is the power to dictate when the draft and waivers will run. Someone can wait so that waivers will run on Saturday or Sunday knowing that it is more likely others won't be around or simpy assure themselves that they will be around.
