That is an excellent question that I do not have the answer to. But I have noticed if my DH gets hurt during the game, Hal may replace him with one guy, and then the next game replace him with someone else. And that someone else WAS available to replace the hurt DH in the game he was hurt. I hope that makes sense. In other words, the computer sometimes randomly chooses different replacements for hurt DHs, in the same situation. For instance; same ballpark, same opponent, and same handed pitcher(both RHP, or both LHP).
I have a theory that may well be WAY off base, but I believe it to be true. The computer(or Hal) likes to get everyone on the team at least a few at bats. This is definitely the case with the CD-ROM, when the same computer manager(Hal) is controlling things. So the guy that replaces your hurt DH in the game he was hurt, might not be the same guy that replaces your hurt DH in the following game. I realize there are other reasons for using two different replacements, for instance pitcher, stadium, and situation. The same can be said of some of the computer's bullpen chooses. Hal likes to make sure all pitchers are used at some point during the season. There are of course ways around this, like setting limits, and quick hooks, but it is almost like little league in the sense that if the guy is on your team, Hal will find a way to get him in the game, even if he is your last resort. This is approach is more realistic, even if it is not the move you would have made given the chance to decide.
