Clutch hitting

Could someone explain to me how this works? The way I read it, it almost looks like a player loses his hit instead of coming through in the clutch.

Yes most players are NOT clutch according to this format. If you see a dollar sign like this; $ next to a base hit,...the base hit is taken away if there are two outs, and runners in scoring position. Now if you see this $ next to an out,.. than the reverse is true. The out becomes a base hit in these situations. Therefore MOST players are not clutch by these standards. However there are a few. And I will leave the finding to you. But keep it in mind that clutch situations are few and far between, and therefore you should not pay too much attention to drafting players that are clutch. Most GMs will agree it helps to have a clutch batter in the 5 hole. But since say Jon McDonald is clutch, and just about everyone else is not, this can be hard to do! You are almost better off ignoring it! Good luck.

You also have to understand that the "clutch" rating in Strat-o-matic does not equate to clutch hitting in baseball, that is success in hitting with runner in scoring position and 2 outs.

It is actually an adjustment to hitters cards so that when the cards are used in a replay of the season that RBI totals for the players are consistant with their actual RBI totals. This is why so many great hitters and great clutch hitters ( think Pujols) often have negative clutch ratings in Strat.
