Resting your regulars on the last day of the season?

Resting your regulars on the last day of the season?

Postby voovits » Thu Jan 15, 2009 6:02 pm

I'm currently in a league where I am ahead in the division by 6 games with 6 games to go. So, if by the end of the day today I am up by 4 or more, I'll end up winning the division, which would pretty much secure me the #3 seed in the playoffs.
now I've been hit with a lot of injuries in the league and am paranoid about losing a player for the playoffs in that last day. Basically, I'm wondering what the general thinking is around here about benching most of your starters for the last day to ensure they don't get injured. Do people generally do that a lot?
The catch is that the team I'm going to play in that last day is the team behind me in the standings and possibly playing for the wild card. Should I look out for the best interests of my team or should I keep my best lineup in there for the sake of the competition?

The only people you should really worry about are those with higher than 1 injury ratings and guys w/o 600 PAs. I'd take out most of the guys that meet that criteria who you really couldn't live without. If you post a link to your team or list the guys who meet the above criteria, I think it would be easier to tell you specifically who to rest.

You need to look out for #1 before worrying about the league in general. Once I clinch a playoff spot I rest all the guys I'm worried about losing and don't give it another thought. You earned that right by playing well enough to clinch early.

How would you feel if you lost your most important player for 15 games in game 162? Would it be worth it to you because you were upholding the integrity of the league? I think not.

Well, here's the link:

It's a 60mil no-DH league so I only have to worry about 8 guys, not 9. If it applies, I may just end up playing Furillo and benching everyone else. Even the guys with enough PA's. Heck, Bill Terry has missed 11 games on several separate injury occasions. I don't know I even want them missing 3 games.
having said that, I just know if I do this, one of my good players will get hurt pinch hitting for the pitcher...

If one of your guys gets a 3 game injury in game 162 he will still only miss just one playoff game since there are 2 off days prior to the playoffs so it is not a huge worry for 600 PA guys.

That's true, I forgot about it. It's been a while since I've actually played a postseason game =)
Even still though, missing 1 game in a 5 game series could hurt.
I suppose there'd be no harm in resting them anyway just to err on the side of caution.
having said all this, I'm going to lose 3 games and the 2nd place team will win 3, making the next day meaningful so I have to use the starters.

Anyone know what the tiebreaker system is? Is the first tiebreaker head-to-head?

Tiebreakers for a 2-way tie are, in order:
- Head-to-head record
- Run differential
- Coin flip

Tiebreakers for a 3-way tie are, in order:
- Best record vs. teams within division
- Run differential
- Coin flip

Thanks for the tiebreaker info.

Isn't it ironic that I sustained 2 separate injuries tonight. Fortunately it was for 5 (Jurges) games and for 1 (Terry AGAIN) game, so it won't effect me into the postseason, though it could have been worse.
