Really bad luck?

Really bad luck?

I know this league is only 9 games in, but I have never had a team like this.

I am playing PETCO, I am last in runs scored and 2nd to last in runs surrendered. Normally, one side (pitching/hitting) will be terrible but this is the first time I have seen both this bad. My pitchers have actually given up more walks then they have strikeouts, which is unusual.

[quote:ccbfdab031="old__toriihunter"]Go through your 9 games and track how many AB's were on your hitter and pitcher cards and vice versa...and I'm sure you're at a 40/60 percentage or worse. Oftentimes it has nothing to do with your own players, and that will even out over time.[/quote:ccbfdab031]

Good idea, I will go back and check that.

Madigan,

Sorry to say, but I don't think this team is all that good, it only rates 1956. I think you need to be more in the 2100 range to be a real threat.

Some thoughts:

Your D up the middle is very weak. Starting Miles and Aviles? Ouch.

Your O v RHP is pretty weak. Miles, Rodriguez and Aviles are all pretty suspect and Beltran and Sweeney are nothing to write home about.

You're very good v LHP however.

Not sure what you're doing with your pitching, but I'm guessing that you're moving Morrow in and out of the rotation? Seems like a lot to pay for 20 or so starts.

You have one stud RP, but your second best guy is also a 1 SR RP. That means you're goign to get lots of IP from Byrdak, Loe, kennedy. I guess if you're using Morrow in the pen, that might help out. Again, not sure exactly how you're planning on using these guys.

Suggestions:

I don't know if you're in a 20% cap hit league. If you are, it will be hard to improve. If you're not, you might be able to make some improvements.

I think you need better D at either 2b or SS (or at least have them provide some offense if you're going to play 3's there).

Be nice to find another bat (or two) v RHP.

I think you would have been better off with a 2 SR guy to back up Soria. I guess if you move Morrow there that might work as he'll pick up a lot of IP. However he isn't going to be very good v LHB on the road!

All I got off the top of my head.

Ya, can't say I like this team much either.

Playing at Petco, you spent a lot of money on BPHRs that are almost worthless at your park. Berkman, Beltran, Ludwick, and Bradley are all better neutral or hitter's park guys. Unless all your divisional foes are in bomber parks, you probably want to move several of these guys. You need 1 or 2 guys to drive in runs, but they need a better ratio of natural home runs to the #BPHRs.

On the pitching side, you could probably get better value there by having guys with MORE #BPHRs. Guys like Sheets, Verlander, Cain, and Jimenez are better bomber park guys. (although a little balance here can be a good thing if your opponents are mostly in bomber parks) Soria isn't a very good value either, because he doesn't even have any BP singles which don't really hurt you, but you pay big time for cards without them.

At least there is some realism in online strato: Ben Sheet is injured. How he got a S6* rating is beyond me.

Hey Sheets had 31 starts and almost 200 IP last year. Sounds like a S6* to me.... He only missed 4 starts.

I agree with you about the BPHRs.

How do you get a rating of your team? I am new and wanted to see how my team rates.

Um, well, that's just a little method I use in conjunction with my rating system.

If you want to post a team, on a different thread, I'll give it a rating when I get a chance.

no offense Joe but whnat makes you think that this rating system is valid?
I have often rejected the idea of a magic formula. I have seen too many different teams win...

Obviously there are great cards for the price. The key is to find those and getting the max out of them in the context of your park and the parks in your division.

The game is just too complex. That is what makes it so fun. My favorite reliever for the price in the 2007 season blows a save on 3 straight rolls on the batters card. Even God would have blown that save.

None taken. It's not a perfect rating system, but I've been testing it and refining it since day one of TSN and it's pretty darn good. It can certainly tell a lousy team from a good team.

Teams within a 100 points or so can be roughly equivalent however. And, when a team is very unbalanced (e.g. destroys LHP) it is more likely to underperform the rating.

When I do a whole league, usually you'll see one team way over its rating and one way under. I chalk that up mostly to the luck of the dice.

In general a higher rated team is going to do better than a lower rated team, particularly when I customize for the parks a team is playing in. It's just in the math and the odds.

For guys just starting out, team ratings help them figure out what a bargain is and how to combine the complexities you describe into a more cohesive whole.

I did lots of team ratings for PBTR and Riggodrill when they started out and they think it helped them so, there must be something to it.

I can do one for you for kicks and grins if you want.
