I've been alive for 42 years and seen them play in 10 World Series with 6 championships. I'm not sure what success would be defined as, but from my perspective that's pretty good. But if you mean success as ROI, I can't imagine anyone is close to the Yankees - no baseball franchise is close in Forbes' most valuable franchise rankings. And in haters, only the Cowboys may be close as a franchise who people spend so much time criticizing. So yeah, I guess that would all signal pretty decent success.
I'll save us all time and post your obvious response:
"If I could spend $300 million on a team I could make the World Series 25% of the time"
And my response:
If you could generate the income necessary to have a $300 million payroll while remaining wildly profitable and were not constrained by any rules preventing you from doing so, you'd be a bad business owner if you did not spend that much.
In other words, don't hate the player, hate the game.
