What is the differnce between a "5" and player being placed at a position he does not play (which the computer will do from time to time).

A guy who is has been assigned to a position and is a 5 may have a decent error rating(the 1 through 5 is a range rating) the lower the error, or e-rating the better. If a player did not play any games at a particular position and he is placed there he will not only be a 5 but he will also be the highest e-rating possible. And in some cases, like shortstop that e rating could be like 88. Now someone like Miguel Cabrera who is a 5 at 1B, does not have the highest e rating possible. But if he had to play SS due to injuries he would be given the highest e rating possible. I hope that helps.

having 5's is like having a 1-8 runner leading off with your baserunning set on very aggressive.
