Salary Cap vs. Live Draft

Postby The Godfather » Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:51 am

As a new Strat-O-Matic player, I notice MANY more Salary Cap Leagues available as opposed to Live Draft Leagues. Any particular reasons for that? What are the pro's/con's to both? I appreciate your insight!

The advantage to a salary cap league is much more balance among the teams in the league. You will seldom see a team win or lose 100 games in a salary cap league. Also the teams talent pool will be a little closer to real life, if you use 80 million, or 60 million dollar cap.

The advantage to a live draft league is; you have a bit more control over building your roster, but if you are new to the game, or you are not familiar with the player pool, you could have your hat handed to you. Personally, I like BOTH formats, but I am in at least 5 salary cap leagues to every one live draft league. Have fun.

Is a Salary Cap League always completed via Auto Draft?

Technically, yes. However, some people like to have somewhat of a live draft but maintain the salary cap idea so they use websites like somdraft.com to conduct the draft. Then, people take the results of that draft and enter their teams here. The autodraft runs, though it is just a formality as no one is competing for players anymore.

That's the problem with the TSN live draft- no salary cap. It's fun but it's a bit of a free-for-all. It's real easy for a particular position to slip past your grasp and, most managers are not real amenable to trading after a live draft. It's like pulling teeth...

The other Site gives you a cap. However, sometimes that way can take FOREVER to complete.

I like them both(of course, I like every SOMO game TSN has put out). Live Draft is more of a novelty, although in ATG IV I am almost exclusively a live drafter vs salary cap.

For new players, I suggest playing $80-100mill cap to start. Just beware of the drop penalty.

There will be more trading in $200mill cap, but the auto-draft can make or break you. If you get a late seed it could be lights out before you even start your first game.

Live Draft is fun, but you have to be fast & have to go in with a basic game plan for at least the first 5 rounds. I agree it is nearly impossible to trade after a Live draft. IMO, there should be a 2nd ATG4 set just for the $200mill cap & Live Draft. While the pool is fine for smaller caps, I don't think the pool is deep enough w/regards to Allstart type seasons for the $200mill/Live Draft games.
