RP Question

RP Question

Postby Honyox R Us » Mon Jun 08, 2009 2:21 pm

I have nearly $11 mill in relief pitchers. My most expensive guy is $3.5 +/- mill. How many innings does he pitch in last night’s games? 0. How many batters did he face? 0.

Now, my $500k RP is another story. He pitched 4 innings in the last 2 games, both of which were 9-8 losses. I lose 2 games because of this guy when my best RP is on the bench.

He gave up 2 runs in the last inning in game 2 and 4 runs in game 3. [u:9ee1ffb60f]I have his card marked as mop-up only. [/u:9ee1ffb60f] How is this guy getting 4 innings of pitching in close games (not mop-up duty in my world) when my best guy doesn’t get to play at all????

New to this game so any insight would be appreciated... :x

You need to be more restrictive with his settings. Quick hook. Avoid before 8th. Max of 1-2 IP. Avoid bad side if he is one-sided.

Can you post a link to your games? It's tough to tell without seeing what the situation was.

Sorry I didn't clarify. I had 'quick hook', 'mop-up' and 'avoid left-handed batters' marked on his card (he's a 2R).

I rarely have issues with the Mop Up guy pitching in the 200X game and I just check "mop up". I'm sure it happens, but the only time I really see it is when my bullpen is short of pitchers.

Put every possible restriction on my cheapo pitcher and he stayed on the bench. However, my most expensive (and effective) RP did too. I can't get the d@#ned computer to put him in!!

I have 'Aggressive' Relief usage and 'Maximize' Closer usage in my manager strategy section. Why can't this guy get into games for me?

Just like in real baseball, when you define someone as the closer, and then maximize closer usage, I think it tends to only use that guy in save situations. In SOM, I think we want to be using these expensive closers in more than just save situations. I suggest leaving the closer's role blank. HAL will probably still figure out that you want that guy to close, but you won't be "restricting" him to that role.

What works well for me is to designate my preferred closer to close both sides and also mark his best side for innings 6-8 and have another reliever checked for innings 6-8 for the other side. For example, Brian Fuentes is often my set up guy against lefties and closer for both sides and someone like Ziegler/Hawkins is my set up guy for righties with no restrictions on any of these particular guys so they are liberally used. Then the restrictions placed on the rest of the bullpen tend to be honored. I also find that you must have a third dependable reliever without restrictions or there are not enough arms to cover the innings or situations that come up. Just my 2 cents.
