I've really about had it

I've really about had it

Postby TomSiebert » Sat Sep 12, 2009 7:02 am

Between the ongoing problems with the server and the continually horrible experiences I've had with the new bullpen interface, I am really on the verge of just walking away from this game, and I can't tell you how much pleasure I've gotten from it in the past eight years or so.

The continual crashes are bad enough, but the new bullpen interface makes no sense to me whatsoever and doesn't pay any attention to what I tell it or even simple logic. My 4th Tour team has lost at least a half dozen games this year when Shell stays in, Rivera in the BP, long past when I've said to have him pulled, is well into a point of weakness, and gives up tying AND THEN WINNING runs. Happened again last night, with Shell set at quick hook, don't relieve before F8, closer set to max.

Another team last night left in Giese in the 9th so he could load the bases and give up a grand slam while to Nick Markakis, a LEFTY, while Billy Wagner got to sit and watch. Geise has no closer rating at all and is not set at slow hook.

The old HAL made some bad calls, but the stuff that's going on now is just retarded. Instead of bringing me pleasure, all I'm getting is disgust, day after day after day.

I'm sorry to hear about your displeasure with the new bullpen logic. I actually think it works much better than the previous system. One or two things to keep in mind from what I've read about Bullpen v2's functionality: "Don't Relieve Before" supersedes "quick/slow hook" settings, so it won't even look at them if you have F8 set for Shell.

Also, by setting your closer to max, it won't want to bring him in unless it is an actual SOM-defined "closer situation", which, to my dismay, I found out was different than a real-life save opportunity.

If you really don't want Shell in there that long, don't give him any "F" setting and leave the quick hook box checked, set Rivera to a fairly low F setting to ensure once he's in there he won't get pulled, and set your closer setting to "regular" so he'll come in for non-closer situations. You can also set him on the "Tied and Late" and "Tied and 9th+" settings, and perhaps even as "Setup".

Best of luck, Tom.

I totally agree that the new bullpen logic is much superior to the old HAL. To me it follows your wishes almost to a tee if you have it set up right.

I totally agree. Super-HAL bullpen is MUCH better. Read your box scores and tweak the new interface.

Can't argue with you about the frequent server problems, but you displeasure over the new bullpen is misplaced. (IMHO)

Kudos on my end for the BP logic as well...

TomSiebert,

I understand that you are trying to tell the system to use Shell up to the point of weakness, and then change him for Rivera.

For this to work, I would recommand "aggressive bullpen" in the strategy page, and Shell with the settings you had. I suspect that you had normal or conservative bullepn.

If it's doesn't work, then I would remove the F8, and simply go with aggressive bullpen, with slow hook set at Shell.

Tom,

I'm sorry you haven't gotten the results you've expected. It's by no means a perfect system... but I wouldn't expect it to be as bad you've experienced. As far as I know, most managers have been pleased with the improvements.

My guess is that you may not be using the settings as they are intended - if that is due in part to less-than-clear instructions, I'm sorry. I did take a quick look at your game last night and it looks like you'd had Giese set to "Don't Relieve Before" F5. According to the play-by-play, the computer was only following that order (Giese was F7 as he faced Markakis) and indeed waited until he reached F5 before removing him. I see that you've since changed it to F8, which seems more in line with what you'd want.

If any of the instructions or explanations I wrote are incomplete or unclear, please let me know.

I hate to pile on Tom,...but I too like the new bullpen logic. And maybe I am just a homer for TSN strat, but I did not even think the old bullpen logic was that bad. And this new version is a big upgrade. We have to remember, almost nothing is perfect.

Also, I see the problems as minor. Maybe they are a big deal to others, but not me. And when they have become a big deal, Bernie and TSN have always made it up to us with free credits. Heck, I would not care if the site crashed for a day or two every couple of months if we kept getting free credits(although I am sure many others would not like that, especially Bernie and TSN).

And one last point(I already mentioned elsewhere), I would hate to think of TSN shutting down these Strat Leagues because of declining interest, or declining profits. So let us be thankful for what we have. It is not like Bernie and TSN don't appreciate us. They always do right by us.

Tom,
I have seen many of your posts, and I believe we have been in several leagues together(maybe more), and I really hope you stick around. You are a big asset to the community, and just look how Bernie addressed you personally on your frustration. That is great customer service!

Well, I'm a big fan of democracy, and clearly there is much support for the new bullpen settings, so I must be doing something wrong. I appreciate the response.

This morning, I've taken ALL my pitchers, save my closer, off "Don't Relieve Before." My mistake has been thinking you needed to pick one of the F(X) settings, but it turns out that is not the case.

Thanks again for the responses. Very convincing that the problem is mine, not the game's.

I was also seeing poor results from pitchers when I was using the Don't Relieve option so I took it off. Has made a big difference. Even when it was F8.

I think it's a case of learning something new and I appreciate the advice given on the forums.
