Set-Up Pitcher: R1 versus R2

Set-Up Pitcher: R1 versus R2

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Thu Sep 24, 2009 5:25 pm

Hello All,

Hope evreyone is having a good summer. I am setting up my autodraft for a 2008 team. I am trying for a R1/C6 closer. Can I successfully match that up with an R1 set-up man or must it be an R2?

Any good or bad experioences to share??

Thanks

I would get a great R1/C6 closer (Rivera, Papelbon) and put him to be the closer and set-up guy, but avoid using before 8th. Then get a good R1 and set him as the back-up set-up guy. I'd set him either avoid using before 6th or 7th, depending on the depth of the other guys in the 'pen. You'll pay extra for R2s, and it can be risky having only two relievers worth more than $1M and then some bums to fill the team out. An R2 will be good when you have a closer who is only a C2 or C3 or something like that (Downs, Marte).

AeroDave provides good advice. Perhaps I would go with "avoid using before the 7th" with the greatest closers.

If you go with a poor defensive infield and/or a stadium with lots of single, you might find a R2 pretty useful.

A R1 who allows three hits/walks within his first inning becomes automatically F0 and gets removed by Hal automatically, whereas a R2 will keep his full power up until at least the second inning of work.

Thnks Gentleman,

Yes, right now I am torn between Thornton/ Howell and Papelbon as my closer.

Thonton is more xpensiuve for just an R1. I am going to play in Fenway.

I've used Thornton as a closer before.

I'm also currently using him in a theme league as a setup guy behind Fuentes.

I used Papelbon in a theme league as a quasi-set up guy / closer with Rivera.

Thanks AD10,

I didn't get Thornton so I am going to use Howell/Oliver and Papelbon in a pitching staff similer overall to your Thornton/ Fuentes staff. i am eager to see how this will work.

Here's my team. I still have over $4M left.

I am still looking for a decent platon-mate for either Ethier or Suzuki.

VMart is gone. I am thinking bout Baldelli for RF.
