Bunting question

Bunting question

Postby Knerrpool » Thu Oct 15, 2009 8:10 am

Maybe a dumb question...

Is bunting (i.e. "bunt more" on the card, and "bunting" in manager strategy) only sacrifice bunting, or is it also bunting for a base hit?

This is NOT a dumb question. It is an excellent question. For TSN Strat purposes it is a sacrifice bunt. However, the computer rules do take into account batters bunting ability and speed, and bunts for hits can occasionally be had. But unless you are in a 60 million dollar league with a small ball team I do not think you want to be bunting a whole bunch. Good luck, and always ask questions.

To clarify, despite our settings "bunt more," etc., if a guy has speed and good bunting ability, HAL will get him bunting more for basehits on its own.

I assume this is correct.

It WOULD be good to have a setting "bunt for basehit more."

I could be wrong, but there is no bunting for base hits in strat. Bunting is always intended as a sacrifice or squeeze play. The results of a bunt can sometimes (rarely) be a base hit, but HAL will not order up a bunt in an attempt to get a hit. The reason for that is that bunt hits are included in the chance to hit, so some percentage of a player's singles chances came from bunt base hits.

For the most part you are correct. However, with the CD-ROM ( and I think the super advanced cards and dice game) you can actually try to bunt for a hit. But for our purposes here, we can not really decide to bunt for hits. But batters who bunt well, can get hits occasionally.

Me too. A bunch. Maybe Bernie can clear this up, and have a more clear description in Strategy "Bunt more for basehits" perhaps?

Check out this post on the strategy message board regarding bunting for a hit.

Anyone notice that Bernie changed the settings so we read now:

sac bunt more
don't sac bunt

So it does not affect the "bunt for a hit" setting.
