Why on earth would HAL do this?

First I couldn't tell who was pitching for my opponent in Game 1 and 2 of the Finals until 10:05 pm (too late),

THen in game 1, with the score 2-1 in my favor, the computer brought in Justin Miller, my .57 mill mop-up guy, to pitch the 7th and 8th innings. He promptly gives up 2 runs (blown save) and I lose 3-2.

Meanwhile, my set up and closer guy, the 7 mill Mariano Rivera, sits on the bench. He can't be tired, because there was a rest day between the semi-finals and finals. (unless I am missing something?)

I don't mind losing if it is fair and square (in its essence it is just a dice game based on probabilities), but I do mind losing if it is stupid or worse (as in somehow rigged) :x

Anyone care to comment? Here is the game

It's a tough loss, but....

HAL very rarely brings on a guy who is R1/Cx in the 7th inning. Ever. So, who had the Middle role? Then when the 8th came around it wasn't a setup situation anymore, so unless Miller was tired, he usually stays in. But, that really didn't matter anyway since the damage was already done.

So, maybe Miller was a suboptimal choice, but Rivera almost always stays on the bench in this situation. Are you positive you had Miller in the Mop Up role?

If you're trying to have the same guy be both your Setup and Closer, turn your Strategy->Closer Usage to "Normal". If you have it on "Maximize", it will (from the help text on that page) "restrict your defined Closer to save situations".

As your opponent for this Finals series I can guarantee you that nothing is "rigged". HAL sometimes makes funny decisions. Neither of our bullpens are very deep. Cla Meredith is not exactly the pitcher I would have wanted pitching in a tied game in the 9th inning of the second game of the series, but that's what I got and he took the loss. So the one good thing about HAL is that it happens both ways - I think we sometimes notice most the moves that hurt our team. Good luck as we move on to games 3 & 4!

Thanks Bernie.

In the 8th inning had Rivera come in according to the dice rolls....oh well never mind

Good luck to you too Doug, I am relieved to learn you are not a hacker :)

P.S. You kicked my butt in the regular season so I am thinking your team is the heavy favorite if I was a gambling man......
