How can people afford so many teams?

I am in my first season playing SOM Baseball on TSN. I am hooked and doing quite well. However, I wonder if I am missing something when I see people who have what appears to be several teams going in different leagues. And when you look at the leaderboard you see that people have been doing this for a long time. Is everyone paying $25 a pop, or 5 for $100? It seems that it would add up rather quickly. Is there some other way that people are playing so many teams and not paying so much for them?
Thanks. I don't mean to insult anyone who has a ton of teams...I just find myself wishing I could play more of this game and trying to figure out what my options are!

Make the championships win 1 free team...win it and you win 2 free teams...

I generally plan on playing 10 games (2 sets of 5/100) a season. When I'm lucky enough to do well in a season you get the freebies that come from making the finals.
Every now and then they run specials also - i watch for those to. And sometimes I just make the tough decision - Do I want that new Blue Ray disc - or another seasons of Strat!

I usually end up buying 2 5-packs per season, so that's 10 (usually I buy the 2nd 5-pack when it's on sale for $80 or some other deal). The older seasons (2001-2006) are all $12.50/season (but there aren't as many leagues going) so that's an easy way to experiment with teams as well. And hopefully there's a free credit or two won by finishing 1st/2nd.
I'm not the most prolific player in terms of # of teams so I don't know how some others manage it, but I've found that I least need 1 team at all times and 2-3 at a time is perfect. Any more than that and I find myself not managing to my full potential.
You can really stretch your $ by participating in drafts on the message boards in theme leagues - it increases your sense of ownership of your team and the drafts usually take a week or two to complete, so you feel actively involved for longer than just the SOM season.
Long response, but you posed a very good question.

I pay for the majority of my teams. I buy them 5/$100. I usually buy 1 or 2 5 packs per month. I personally like to have 10+ teams going at once.

If you do the 5 packs the cost is $20 per team. With each team you get 8 weeks of enjoyment following the progress each day. That is only 37¢ per day per team you have going. Give up that donut and play Strat. Actually I think donuts cost more than that these days. The 37¢ per day cost goes down when you win free credits too. Seems very reasonable to me.

if donuts aren't your thing, you may have been to a bar or two. $20 in a bar hardly lasts a hour. like mentioned already, $20 for two months is doable. 8-)

LMBombers breaks it down perfectly. This is a relatively cheap hobby when you break it down that way and really think about.
I don't golf like all the rest of my co-workers do ($40-70 in greens fees every weekend + $100s for the clubs). I'm not into classic or high-end cars (I drive a '02 Cavalier with 180M miles on it). I don't have a boat. I have a wife and 2 kids, but 0 girlfriends. I don't smoke and I drink infrequently.
My only vices are sports card collecting, SOM Online and my quarterly poker game (which I do relatively well at - more $$ for Strato!)
I usually have between 2-4 teams going at once, never more than 5 and I think I purchase probably 3-4 5-packs per year. Between those and the credits I infrequently win (a poor rate which is due in large part to being in too many leagues with LMBombers!) that keeps me in Strato for around $400/year or $7.70/week or $1.10/day.
Water instead of coke for lunch and you can play that frequently.

180 million miles? I'm immediately buying myself an '02 Cavalier.
