Does Strat include a pitcher's hitting ability in pricing?

And if so, doesn't that mean that good hitting pitchers are systematically overpriced in DH leagues compared to lousy hitting pitchers of identical pitching ability?

My guess is not.

I played a full season with capable hitters on the mount. All pitchers were 8N or 4w (note: Zambrano was acquired at exactly mid-season for Peavy, whose rating is not so bad--7N).

The line for the pitchers were not too bad:
.220, 19 doubles, 3 HR, 36 rbis, 42 runs scored, their net contribution was 28.6 LWTS, so roughly 3 wins for the season, roughly 0.6 wins per pitcher.

So not a bad effect, but nothing to send a postcard about.

Seems to me then that good hitting pitchers have an advantage then in no-DH leagues, and its more than just being able to hit well, its being underpriced.

My answer was confusing. Let me rephrase.

My guess is that TSN does NOT include hitting in the pricetag. If so, good hitting pitchers are indeed underpriced (in non-DH leagues).

Like I said, in my little experiment, hitting was worth 0.6 wins per starting pitcher. Assume that, on average, teams spend 80M to win 80 games, then good hitting pitchers are probably worth on average 0.6M better than their pricetag.

Something to consider, especially when you consider pitchers at sub 2M mark (0.6 is worth 30% of 2M), but I would not conclude that good hitting pitchers are de facto the superbargains of the set.

Stadium effects, in my opinion, have larger effect than 0.6M.

This said, all numbers here were generated from my little experiment. Perhaps the hitting ability of the best hitting pitchers are worth closer to 1M---my pitchers only hit 3 homeruns, which I thought was low considering that most of my pitching staff had "normal" ratings. Also, I played in a relatively low-hitting stadiums. Effect would be larger in Coors.

Definitively some food for thoughts.

Yes but sub 2M pitchers would likely get less ABs than higher priced ones due to the fact that they probably wouldn't be in the game as long.

I would also guess that pitcher's hitting is not included in pricing for 200x players. In ATG, where no-DH is the default, there might be a little value added in for the pitcher's hitting, but I doubt it.

In any case, I think good hitting pitchers are added value. However, as marcus wilby pointed out, the value of picking the right pitcher in the right stadium is a bigger consideration. So, if two pitchers are about the same in a no-DH league, you might as well take the one who hits better.
