Is it worth using the L and R splits from publications such as the Bill James Handbook along with the OB,TB, BPHR, chances from the ratings book to set a line up?
I usually use the ratings book chances but have been looking at the plits and was thinking of using them as a supplementary help.
Is it worth it?

i'm thinkin not much if you have the ratings book.....
since SOM is a replay simulator, i would expect that someone who faced crappy lefthanders and did well would not have as good a card vs lefties as someone who faced great lefties and did well........

Apparently they don't take that into account though. It doesn't matter what the quality of the pitchers were. All that matters is hits, etc. against lefties or righties.

In strat it's all about what's on the card. Real life L/R splits don't tell you anything of value you don't already get from the ratings book.

If anything, it can probably get you into trouble. It's not because Strat uses a flawed system, it's because each 12 team league has unique characteristics not found in a real season. Such as two teams (same division) play in Petco, and two in BOB.

pay extra special attention to the statistical splits--the cards are overrated
 :P

So are the cards the ultimate guide or not? Tersignf seems to think not whilst everyone else seems to think so. I went through my current lineups based on the card values and then looked at the splits and came up with pretty much the same lineups. The splits just helped me refine positions and confirm my views.
Hit OB TB
E.g. Thome vs R Card values 19.3/43.3/50.9
Ave OBP SLG
R Split .294/.435/.641
What I see with this information is that Thome's card and actual values both definitely put him in #4 position. That is how I use the information.
