Defense stats for players who "can't" play the position

There are catchers who have listed defense stats of c5(+5)e16. I'm wondering...is that even preferable to a non-catcher manning the position? What are the defense stats for out of position players?

What about a center fielder who is not listed for the corner outfield spots? Is the 5e25(+5) still in effect?

Thanks! So it is functionally pointless to draft a bench player who is listed as a c5(+5)e16...he's no better at playing catcher than Ichiro is.

Theclaw, an outfielder can play the other outfield spots. I'm not entirely sure how it works in every case; but in the case that you mention, a CF (with no other rated OF positions) can play the other two OF spots at the same rating as they have for CF. CF is the toughest, RF the next toughest, and LF the easiest. So a RF (again, with no other rated OF positions) could play LF at the same rating as well. However, a guy who is a 2 in RF, and a 4 in CF, will play LF at a 4. If you're a 1-rated LF with no other OF ratings? I'm not sure if you gain a +1 for RF and +2 for CF, or if it makes you like a 4 or 5. But your e rating and arm should stay intact regardless.

Here's the rules straight from the rule book:

[b:b393c62199]Playing a Defensive Player Out of Position [/b:b393c62199]

[i:b393c62199]You should use your discretion about using a player out of position.

If a manager uses a player at a position not listed on his card then that player is considered a 4 or 5 fielding rating, depending on whether he ever played that position. In addition, he should be given the worst possible E rating. He should be given a +5 throwing rating if he goes to the outfield or catcher. In addition, if a player is going to catcher , give him a T-rating of 1-20 and a PB rating of 1-20. The exceptions to this rule are outfielders who may play art outfield position they are not rated for by using the following adjustments to their defensive rating (do not change their e-rating or arm):[/i:b393c62199]

Table 8: Outfield Conversion Chart
Position not rated for

position rated for

.....CF... RF... LF
CF N/A .+1.. +2
RF .0 ...N/A.. +1
LF .0 .....0.... N/A

I've ALWAYS wish TSN would let us just draft 3 OF's reguardless of position and let us play them out of position with the possible penatly if we wished. But they don't so this only applies to injury replacements

Thanks guys! I had this happen to me on a 2005 team recently. Had no back up for Giles in rightfield. Bruntlett is my only outfield backup and he is a two in centerfield. I almost made a move when I saw my oversight but did not pull the trigger. Glad I held off. :)

the problem with not having a backup rightfielder is the assumption that HAL would make a logical choice by putting Bartlett (a 2 in cf) into right in event of an injury. I mostly know 2004 HAL, and maybe he's drinking less now, but the HAL I know was just as likely to throw Jennifer Lopez out there as your backup centerfielder. A couple of times I went without a backup centerfielder, hoping Larry Walker -- 2(-3 ) -- would move over from right. Instead, HAL would throw my backup catcher out there and leave Walker in rf...go figure :)

It won't let us play someone out of position.

So, for example, what if I don't include a player in my RF lineup spot, and have Morgan and Bourne on the bench, with no one on my team with RF listed. Is it safe to assume that either bourne or Morgan will play RF? Will they alter my lineup positions too?
