Our 2003 league started last night (59081)- one manager must have access to your computer-(i wasn't playing him last night, but I'm playing him tonight)-He had different lineups vs Dubose (9R lefty) and Reuter (7L lefty)-the Dubose lineup had 2 additional lefty hitters (Jenkins and Burroughs)-The reuter lineup had Lorreta and Rivera, both righties, replacing them- there were no injuries- The changes were made deliberately to gain an unfair advantage. Having the ability to create lineups for each pitcher gives one a huge advantage, I suspect that if something isn't done I will see different lineups tonight vs Lidle (R 4L) and Dreifort (R7R)-

It's possible that the manager didn't set his lineup at all and allowed HAL to set the lineup for him. Under this condition, I could see different lineups being fielded for the different pitchers.

I think that you, and others on this site, should consider options like this one before accusing someone of computer hacking and cheating.

Hal choosing lineups

Postby ssnicker » Tue May 04, 2010 5:12 pm

First, notice I did not name the manager Or his team and I also pointed out that I was not involved in the games- If he had not set lineups, then Hal would have set lineups for him; however, it would have been the same lineup for all lefties. I did consider this option, but the two times (2003) where this has happened to me in the opening series of a season Hal chose the same lineup for all the right starters thrown at me, with a different lineup vs the one lefty-
If Hal varied the lineups, then I believe the variations would be random. I realize that it could be a coincidence that both changes were very favorable vs the two lefties involved-and I hope if Hal is making up different lineups vs two lefties in the same series that those changes are random. Otherwise what is the point of making up lineups? If Hal is going to make up advantageous lineups for me in a series where I am facing a reverse righty and a hard righty, the best strategy would be to empty the lineup vs right for the series and let Hal choose different ones for me...

I had a 101 win team letting HAL manage the lineups :-)

There is no unfair advantage. Everyone has the option of letting HAL chose the lineups for them.

Hal choosing lineups

Postby ssnicker » Tue May 04, 2010 7:05 pm

If Hal selects lineups for each individual game, that is something I was not aware of. If the manager involved knew this and used it to his advantage then I have no problem with it. I'm glad I was paying attention and learned something new. Another loophole available. I'll try it - my team can start anywhere from 2 to 5 right batters vs right and 2 to 5 lefties vs lefties- next time a team throws a reverse and a hard pair of same arm pitchers I'll let Hal choose the lineups and see what happens-

Using HAL to chose your lineups is risky. He might seem like the best manager in the world one game and like Homer Simpson the next. If HAL was always so smart everyone would be letting him chose the lineups. I prefer to make my own.

Dave's point is still correct. If you feel compelled to post you should phrase it in the manner of looking for an explanation rather than jumping to the conclusion someone is doing something unsportsmanlike. Let a consensus of informed opinions explain what could have happened and you will always save yourself the trouble of wrongly accusing someone, whether accused anonymously or not.
