Hal has lost his ever loving mind!!!

Last night in a 5-2 victory Hal decided to do this...

I have absolutely NO defensive subs set up any where in my team settings...yet
Hal did this last night going into the 9th inning

SUBSTITUTE 2B- Robert Andino
SUBSTITUTE LF- Shin-Soo Choo
SUBSTITUTE CF- Michael Brantley
SUBSTITUTE RF- Ryan Sweeney
SUBSTITUTE P - David Aardsma (role: Closer

He subbed Andino in for Sanchez?????

Moved my 2 CF with a -4 arm to RF so my LF(3 +2) could move to CF and my
RF (3 -3) could go to left????????

Please explain if possible

The one explanation I keep coming back to on these is that HAL doesn't like it when guys are played "out of position". Sweeney is a right fielder 1st and Brantley is a center fielder 1st. Choo is primarily a right fielder too, but Sweeney is better, so he shifted Choo to LF.

So, whenever the substitution logic kicks in, HAL takes into account what a person's "primary position" is and this can often lead to suboptimal defensive substitutions. I think people need to take this into account when picking their teams if you play a guy in their 2nd or 3rd rated position--especially in the outfield.

The Andino one is what probably got everything started. My guess there is that this is a no-DH league and HAL was double switching to move the pitcher's spot in the batting order.

This is a DH league....

"whenever the substitution logic kicks in"

don't I contol substitution through the player and team settings???

If no subs are indicated why does Hal do it??

I also have no PH/PR set for all of these guys

Well, if it's a DH league, I'm not sure why the substitution logic kicked in there at all. It's pretty darn unusual for a 9th inning defensive replacement at 2b resulting in a worse 2nd baseman being put in unless you have some settings to that effect. Maybe Sanchez had "tightness in his leg" and HAL didn't want to take any chances with a three run lead. :)

But, when HAL decides to make ANY defensive substitution, he seems to do the entire defense. So I would expect the Brantley/Sweeney/Choo moves are likely to happen every once in a while regardless of your settings. (i.e. your 1st baseman gets injured or whatever)

Game link?

Well, Taveras pinch ran for Sanchez in the top of the 9th, so there's your reason for Andino playing 2B.

I always maintain that there is some sort of "logic" to HALs moves. The problem with that so-called "logic" is that we don't always agree with it.
I think the "logic" behind the outfield switcharoo is that HAL thought it would be best to have the better throwing arm in RF, so he made the switch.
Not the most sound of strategies, but I'd say that's probably the reasoning.

Yeah you'll have to mark Sanchez as Do Not Pinch Hit/Run for. I had to do the same thing for a league I had Sanchez in. His poor stealing & running ratings make HAL want to replace him in pinch situations and at the time of the pinch run, you were behind 2-1.

Taveras scored off the single - not sure if Sanchez would have. I'll leave that for someone else to figure out. ;)

I think Hal cares more about range than arm strength. If you do the math I believe Hal set up your defense to have the best defensive range.

5 chances with 3 range and 2 chances with 1 range, versus 4 chances with 3 range and 3 chances with 2 range.

I would appreciate anyone more famaliar with the range charts to chime in if I am incorrect.
