lineup substitutions ignored?

HAL seemingly ignored my substitution instructions, as far as I can tell.

I had C Pena out for the first 2 games of a series, left him in my default lineup. In game one v RHP I had Youkilis listed as the first backup at 1B, which would then switch R Pena to 3rd and bring Furcal in at SS. Instead HAL played Dobbs, who should have been backup 2 at 3B and 1B.

In game two v LHP I had Evans listed as Backup 1 at 1B, which would have moved Fuld to LF and Granderson to CF. Instead, HAL played Fiorentino in LF, where he was listed as backup 2.

Am I giving HAL too many instructions here? Are there too many lineup changes for him, so that he's making the simplest move? Do I have it set up wrong? Or is it a flaw in the default lineup structure?

Let me know what you think. It seems to me I've done this sort of switch numerous times and it's been fine. What am I not seeing?

Thanks.

HAL can only handle substitutions that go one deep.

Here's an example from my 70s team:

[u:eb66d86618]Pos Starter, Sub[/u:eb66d86618]
LF North, Brye
CF Davis, North
RF Shamsky, Brye

Davis gets injured; North moved to CF; Brye plays LF

However, if Brye is starting, HAL flakes out:

LF North, Brye
CF Davis, North
RF Brye, Jackson

Davis gets injured; North moves to center; HAL decides on his own what happens after that.

Thanks, Coyote! I was afraid I was asking too much and I was right. I'll keep it in mind.
