in this example I understand that 11 attempts have been made with 4 clean hits and 8 times successfully advancing runners...

question is... are the 4 clean hits part of the the 8 advances?

I always assumed this was the case, and if your example is a real one, you pretty much confirmed it (4+8>11--not possible).
