Question about #'s

Question for you guys. On hitters or pitchers cards, when a roll is prefaced by the #, according to the "How to Read a Strato Card", an additional roll against the ballpark value determines the HR.
ex.
#8- HR 1-8
fly(rf)B 9-20
My question is then, to what extent does the actual play that is listed on the card play, in this example the HR 1-8 and fly(rf) 9-20, if the roll will always be put up against the BP rating anyway? Is it superfluous in the online game and reserved for the actual card game or am I missing something? Thanks in advance for your help.
