Hi Dale. Personally, I use these settings a lot, and I change them from night to night for my favorite teams of the moment. (The teams that have fallen out of favor or interest get stuck with settings in more of a default mode on my part).
The hitters section I leave set more or less ongoing, but I adjust the stealing settings every night, depending on the hold ratings for the pitchers and the arms for the catchers. The rest of the hitters settings I tend to leave on the particular settings that I came up with for that particular player on that particular team.
The pitchers settings I tend to adjust on a nightly basis early in the season. Sometimes later in the season, I just tend to leave it set with what seems to have worked throughout the year (hopefully!). If I have a full roster of pitchers to pick from, I will analyse them for each night's games vs the expected opponent's batting lineup, and assign starters and make settings based on that analysis. But if a team is out of the race, or if I have a new "pet" team, then I just set it and leave it as is from night to night.
I really absolutely find that HAL follows the settings - at least in my experience. You kinda have to find out for yourself how HAL adjusts things and applies it in his own way - there are many actual real tricks and tendencies that HAL uses. But really you just have to try it out and see how it works for you when you set it a certain way. I just find that HAL DOES seem to apply the settings when you make them. You have to know how HAL prioritizes them though. E.g. for pitcher settings, the order of priority of HAL's instructions are (I believe):
-Max __ innings;
-Don't relieve before F_ settings
-Quick/Slow Hook
-Avoid __HP
You can use some in conjunction neatly and with good effect. SO if you tick Dont relieve before F8 AND quick hook, HAL will absolutely wait till the pitcher hits an F8 OR LOWER, but then if you have ALSO ticked "quick hook", then HAL will lift the pitcher fairly quickly after that. If you dont tick "quick hook", HAL might leave that pitcher in for a few more batters, by which time the endurance factor may be down to F3 or lower. I personally don't like doing that to pitchers, so I almost always tick "quick hook", and I rarely go below "F6", and mostly use "F6" for the "don't relieve before __ settngs" - when I use them at all. Often when I use the "don't relieve before settings" it is because I have set the bullpen useage to "aggressive" on the team strategy section, but yet I really want to leave a particular pitcher in for as long as he can go without getting too tired - e.g. Sabathia on an otherwise poor starting pitcher rotation, with a good (or decent) bullpen. (Dale, does this sound familiar??). :)
