Check out the Ball Parks first and decide if you want a hitters park or pitchers park. If you go with a park like Petco than you don't need to spend a lot of money on pitching as the park will help make pitchers better. On the other hand if you go with a bunch of power hitters with an (#) beside the homeruns than these players will under perform.
Decide on what you want out of your team before you go out and just pick players. Good Luck
