Injury substitution

I had this lineup in the 3 through 5 slots:
3- Josh Hamilton
4- Albert Pujols
5- Jose Bautista
Hamilton gets hurt and HAL then jumps Bautista ahead of Pujols. New lineup:
3- Jose Bautista
4- Nelson Cruz
5- Albert Pujols
Seems that the only thing HAL should have done was slot Cruz somewhere. I assume HAL was looking at the 4R for Bautista and the 2L for Pujols but think what was there should have been left alone no mattter how illogical
I guess the questions are: Should the logic be revised or is HAL just kindly fixing my stupidity? Does HAL generally make good subs into the batting order? If I had a sub listed would he have been slotted into the same batting order slot as Hamilton?
