I won my first World Series!!!

I had a crazy season full of a ton of comebacks and blown saves on both sides. I had solid clutch hitting all year and won 93 games to take home field advantage by 1 game. My Championship Series was nuts with amazing comeback including scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win game 6.

I had a rash of playoff injuries but many players played well above their regular season and somehow I overcame them. Gary Ward drove in 19 runs in 12 playoff games. Dale Murphy came to life and carried the load in the World Series despite having a poor offensive regular season. Floyd Youmans put together a string of good starts to compensate for Doc Gooden continuing to not be able to beat #1's.

If the World Series would have gone to a game 7 I would have been screwed. Randolph (leadoff hitter), Canseco (leading HR hitter), Ward (amazing playoffs) would all have been unavailable.

I officially give the MVP award to Gary Ward although with his high injury rating I probably wouldn't draft him again.

Another new guy wins it all!

How did you know who to draft? Did you check out some old threads here on 1986?

I'm happy for you.

Congratulations, it's a great feeling. You obviously made the right choice on starting pitcher for game 6!

Just a combination of looking hard for cards I thought had hidden value and following advice of the people on this board. I also learned from my first season where I took a 38-22 team and missed the playoffs going 81-81 making stupid roster moves at penalty.

I was very frustrated at times with my squad this season and there were so many crazy games due to my offensive strategy of focusing on clutch hitting ratings both in roster design and with my batting lineup. I didn't go crazy and make moves though.

I tried like crazy to trade Dale Murphy and Tony Gwynn as I didn't like their clutch factors but people offered me either nothing or ridiculous counter offers that would ask me to just eat bad contracts I would have to dump and take a 20% hit on. I sat tight and of course ultimately got lucky in the end. I kept Gwynn 3rd or higher at all times and primarily batted Murphy 8th so his occasional pop could clear bases but his bad clutch wouldn't kill innings as much. Both players were amazing in the world series.

I think the biggest factor that helped me was 2 of the other 3 teams in my division were wayyyyy too active with roster moves and really hurt the value of their teams throughout the season. So when the final long stretch of unbalanced schedule happened I had a big advantage over teams in the other divisions. This allowed me to get the home field advantage for my team which was much better at home.

Of course it all came down to luck but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun or it didn't feel good to win.

I can't do that after you win it all!

Enjoy.

Nice job.

Should be a long running thread for first time winners, unless there already is.

Seeking and following advice from vets in here can be very helpful. hackra has given me very solid consistent to extremely helpful advice at times.

Great job with this team. I actually remember helping you with it before you started playing. Don't remember if you took any of my advice, but I do remember (later) telling you not to drop Murphy.

You had some of the very consistent money '86 players (Youmans, Stewart, Ozzie, Pendleton, Gwynn, Canseco) plus, you got some amazing performances out of some fairly marginal guys (Horner, Knight, Quiz, Ward). You got, quite possibly, the single best '86 Ray Knight season ever.

I doubt I would have predicted 93 wins and a title for this team, but the key is to make the playoffs (which certainly seemed possible) and then see what happens. Never panic, especially when you are winning! I usually find that waiting out the other teams that do panic is an absolutely key strategy! :)
