Question Regarding Catchers and Injuries

My understanding is that if one of the two catchers on your roster is injured, your other catcher cannot be injured. It is my further understanding that this rule only applies if: (1) you only
have two players on your roster that are eligible to play catcher; and (2) neither of the catchers are the DH. Is this true?

That has been my experience, yes. That is why I try to carry a high-injury backup, in order to keep my preferred catcher in as many games as possible.

If your first catcher is injured, I think your second catcher can still get injured but only for the rest of that game. Someone else may be able to verify.

Well how does that increase the chances of your preferred C being in as many games as possible?

I mean if he is your preferred C, then you will be starting him on opening day and in most games, correct? IOW he'll be playing more, raising the risk of him being injured and your non-preferred back up coming in and hence being bullet proof, no?

If the backup catcher is my DH (or at least a frequent PH), he has more chances of getting sidelined. Yes, there might be a problem if both went down in one game, but I have yet to see that happen.

I did not answer this as well as I could, the other day. Let me try again...

Yes, I will play my preferred C as much as possible -- just as I would if I had a 0-injury sub. The difference is that if my sub gets sidelined at all, then that makes my preferred C bullet-proof. He will never play fewer games that way and he is likely to play more.

Likewise, if my sub has a high injury rating, other managers are likely to shy away from him, even if he is a decent hitter and/or fielder. When I do get stuck playing him, I'm still better off than if I had a low-injury, poor hitting backup.

I absolutely agree with this philosophy; it has always worked for me.

All hail Jose Morales! (and may he spend plenty of SOM time malingering ...)

2 Catchers Out Simultaneously and 2 Pitchers

Both Napoli (7 games) and Barajas (15 games) where out for at the same time. I had a utility player, Kelly c5, who filled in.

At the same time 2 pitchers went down Wandy Rodriguez, 10 games and Ross Detwiler, 5 games.

The team is 9 games over despite the injuries.

Ken
