In an earlier thread I had asked the question how does HAL make injury decisions, actually I was whinning that HAL had made a bad injury substitution choosing a bad fielder Merloni over K. Robinson against a right handed pitcher.
At some point in that thread Charlie came on and said that we could determine who HAL chose in this and other situations if we would use the manager's defensive replacement function. HAL would know our preferences. I asked a question later that I am not sure Charlie saw which was will doing that induce HAL to think we want to have a sub replace a starter late in the game? Well last night I got my answer.
A little background. I had an injury in the first game of three and HAL did a strange thing in replaicng my shortstop Everett instead of using Devi Cruz a natural ss replacement, he choose to move Mora to ss, and take my DH E. Young in to play third. Disaster. Bad d. So I remembered what Charlie said so I set D Cruz as the defense replacement. I did the same with my other team. On that team Cruz was the replacement for Furcal, not as a late inning replacement but in case of injury. Sure enough HAL misunderstood the instruction and replaced Furcal with Cruz for defensive replacement. Game went into extra innings, yatta yatta.
So I guess the moral here is you can solve the injury replacement problem by using defense replacement designations but yes you are now telling HAL that you want a 4 to replace a 2 late in close games. Go figure.
