Roster Ideas

All right, after a semi-successful rookie campaign in 2005, I'm back with my first 2006 team. I think it looks all right, still pre-waivers so I have to think about it like I'm going to be making some changes - I'd like some opinions from you guys, too, if possible.

I'm not sure that Joe Blanton is going to be the answer in my rotation. I like the other three, though, I think. Santana should be good, as always. The only reason I see keeping Blanton would be his 4L rating, because paired with Weaver, there would be no way for people to stack their lineups against both of them. Does that make sense?

I've got Alex Cora penciled in at second base, and am anticipating a really nasty offensive season from him, but I think that his defense will make up for it. 2e8 at second isn't too shabby for .67M, right?

The bullpen is set for a major overhaul. Looking really hard at B.J. Ryan and crossing my fingers. You guys think he would work in SBC?

I'm hoping that the pairing of David Ortiz and Jonny Gomes proves to be a solid punch in the middle of the lineup, but am I spending too much on two players in this lineup? And what do you guys think of Jeff Francouer? Should I be looking for a different rightfielder because of his .336 OBP? Was thinking about trying to get John Rodriguez to platoon with a lefty masher in right, although maybe defense should be a bigger concern.

My corner infield positions are pretty ugly, too. No first baseman, and then Jeff Cirillo at third. Scary. That will all change, though. Any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated. First time around, this is harder than I thought it would be!

Francour isn't a good hitter vs righties, but please don't use weak, as he is N powered, not W.

That being said, if (I dont suggest it) you do use Cora at 2b, then Matheny at C, that's basically 2 holes in your lineup, you cannot have another one. So the other 7 better all contribute, which is why I advise dumping Francour for a player who is more balanced.

Rowand is great Def, offense, eh well he is neutral in the clutch, probably your #7 hitter. Gomes #2, Ortiz #3, that still leave a lot of positions to fill....

Agree with the other posts, you really have four holes against RHP with Matheny, Cora, Francoer and Rowand. You need to replace two of these guys at a minimum and probably three with better OB%. Cirillo adds another concern. He has reasonable OB, but he gets hurt and he's slanted to lefties. You might need a replacement for him, a platoon partner vs. RH, or at minimum a backup for his injuries.

Your pitching looks okay, although Blanton is not ideal for your park your thinking on pairing him with Weaver is sound.

Good luck.

here is my team, 5-1 as of today. I have Blanton and Santana (along with RJ, Zach Duke (a complete stud) and Contreras.

I like Blanton a lot. He has:

1. low WHIP
2. opposition BA last year is .227. His card is similar.
3. 4L is great with a hard RH
4. fairly low walks.

I'd keep him.

I've just noticed that the 100 mil game allows you to have expensive backups. :?
