[i:4240b97ec6]3/20/2006 - 03/26/2006[/i:4240b97ec6]

Last week out of the nominations submitted for Game of the Week, one stood out from the rest:

GotW #1: Johan Santana's Opening Day No-No

Staff ace Johan Santana of the Louie Longballers took only 101 pitches to no-hit the Riverside Paladins on "True Opening Day" (first night of 2006). The heavily reverse-balanced Santana faced a lineup of only 3 lefties in Petco Park, so the odds were stacked in his favor from the start. Of note was losing pitcher Felix Hernandez's post-game quote: "I've seen a lot of good performances in my time"... uh, the kid's 19 years old.

Post the URL of the game here; if there's some context that goes with the game, be sure to write that up too. From now on, we'll consider games for the whole week, Monday through Sunday. And, at the end of the year, we'll pick one game from the list of GotW's whose winning team [b:4240b97ec6]will win a free 1-year subscription to The Sporting News weekly magazine![/b:4240b97ec6]

Thanks Bernie

Johan Santana thanks everyone for the GOW honors, and was quoted

"This is a great honor, but my pitching needs to be more consistent if I am to help my team win the division".

His manager agrees with the statement. "Santana has been good, but the team needs to hit the darn ball if we are to win consistently"

The Longballers are currently tied for 1st in their division with a 13-11 mark and Santana is a dissappointing 3-3 with a 1.77 ERA and a 0.89 Whip.

GOW Nomination

In a sleeper at Petco, the Longballers and Oakbrook fish battled for 14 long innings before a winning run crossed the plate with an error and wild pitch helping things along. The Japanese sniper So Taguchi launched a Sac Fly to win the game for the Longballers. The Longballers held the Fish to just 4 hits over 14 innings in a 3-2 victory.
Roy Halliday gave up 2 hits and no runs through 7.
After the closer Ryan gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in the 9th blowing the save he settled in and D. Riske came in to scoop up the victory with 3 no hit, scoreless innings.

I figured I would nominate to get things started, I am quite sure there are more interesting games than this one for this week, but what the heck.
