what's with the draft process???

Postby str8change » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:57 pm

I got into a strato league for the first time after being a TSN memeber and fantasy game player for a few years now, and I have to admit, I'm still in the preseason but the cluster-fu ck the draft process is has already got me to the point that I'm not sure I even care anymore about my team or my league... after killing an hour preranking 25 players I actually wanted, I expected not to get every guy I had pre-ranked, but at least the majority, as there were several sleepers on my team and definitely a few low budget guys so I could fit under the cap, but the sheer amount of trash that got dumped on my team in this hoaky autodraft system has me infuriated! I probably had 6-7 guys that I pre-ranked drafted on my team at all, and only one in my top 10-12 players got onto my roster, and of the riff raff that got dumped on me that I didn't want, it's every piece of sh!t overpriced fool in the game so I'm busted straight up against the cap and now there's nobody to go out and get who's worth a darn, and I'm stuck with not only a bad team, but nobody I care to follow every day for a whole season...

Am I the ignorant one for not realizing that I could have signed up for a live draft strato league or is this just how lame this game is, and either you like it and are a strato guy or you don't like it and wasted an hour of your life pre-ranking players for nothing and throughly pissed away $25???

if you read the FAQ, the draft for the SOM game does NOT work like a normal fantasy draft.

In a normal fantasy draft, if your #1 pick is gone, it moves to your #2 pick.

Here if your #1 pick is taken, it give you the player at the same position, who is closest in salary AND who is not on anyone elses draft card.

It works really completly differently, I'm sorry your draft was bad, but there is always some decent players left

thanks for the info... that makes my roster make a hell of a lot of sense!! I wish I had gotten into this forum and asked a few more questions before jumping right into a league completely ignorant... oh well live and learn, and hopefully remember what you learned for the next dumb situation!

hang in there...there's enough good players out there to field a nice team...and after that, be patient...many managers love to tamper, and will turn over quite a few players from their rosters, probably including a few of your favorites...

so build the best team you can and keep your eyes peeled to the waiver wire...

at least that would be my advice...

Yeah these guys are right. You will always find enough good players out there. One guy in a league I was in actually DROPPED Bonds!

Just search the F/A list and make your waiver claims. When waivers pass pick up the best players you can find at the speed of light and then worry about who you'll drop or who'll fit with your team.

I have been in about 20 leagues over the past several years and I have always been able to get at least 65% of the people I drafted with often over 80%. If half of your team is a bunch of junk you didn't put on your draft list then you happen to be picking the more popular players and didn't put those high enough on the list (a lot of that is luck) and in that case you will hopefully have fun working on your roster before the season begins to obtain acceptable players.

For almost every team you'll have cases in which you can't find a particularly acceptable player and have to compromise. For example, maybe you wanted ARod at SS because no other SS's are any good or fit your scheme but you either didn't put ARod 1st or you didn't get lucky enough to get him with your 1st pick (ARod is probably on many people's lists at the top) and in that case you'd just have to be satisfied finding the best SS to fit your scheme within your available money.

I noticed you said follow everyday. You do realize this isn't a fantasy league. It's based on last years stats. This upcoming baseball season is irrelevant. Post your team it could be better than you think.

actually, it's the '80's version and I know it's not based on today's stats but it is still a league I'd try to keep up with several times a day, so I can take advantage of whatever I can...

my team is:

Pitchers (in rank of salary)
SP Tom Candiotti
SP Scott McGregor
SP Larry McWilliams (WTF!!!)
SP Andy Hawkins
SP Ed Whitson
RP Dave Righetti
RP Jeff Reardon
RP Kent Tekulve
RP Doug Sisk (never heard of him)

Hitters (in salary rank)
Dave Winfield
Sixto Lezcano (this stiff was a part time player much of the decade and is my 2nd highest paid guy!!!)
Kevin Mitchell
Kent Hrbek
Lance Parrish
Terry Pendleton
Bo Jackson
Rich Gedman
Wally Backman
Ron Kittle
Shawon Dunston
Carmelo Martinez
Tony Scott
Tom Hulett

So as you can see I got pretty well bent over the table and assraped, this is a sad as hell team, and I pre-ranked Righetti, Reardon, Tekulve, Parrish Pendleton, Bo Jackson and Winfield, and Winfield was my only player pre-ranked in my top 8.... I hate to say it but whern I had almost as many guys drafted to my team that I've never heard of before as I did in my pre-rankings, and I was a teenager in the 80's and followied baseball closer then than any other tiem fo my life, it's pretty much feeling like a wasted $25 right about now! The only saving grace is I'm too competitve to give up but I'm not the least impressed at this point.

The 80's is a completely different animal. Almost ant team can be good and any team can be bad. There is a lot more in season management and attention needed. What ballpark are you in and what SS's with a 1 or 2 def ratings are available and I will try to help you salvage something. BTW if you are in a extreme hitters park Sisk can be a value. Sixto is capable of having a monster season but he isn't one of my more desired OF's.

Wow, Sixto Lezcano, brings back great Strat dice league memories, he was a stud with all those walks.
