I used to try to get all ones up the middle and than because my offense would suffer because of that I would get 3's and 4's at the corners but it didnt seem like I had a great defensive club
Now I have a team with only one 1 Hudson up the middle plus a 1 at first and the rest all two's except one 3in rf. That team seems to be tremendous defensively.
So my ? is this which defense do you feel is better

When I can get the 1's up the middle, my team ERA is considerably less as is the WHIP.

Simple ways to calculate this:
1B*2 + 2B*6 + SS*7+ 3B*3 + LF*2.5+RF*2.5+CF*4
The lower the better.

1b-2 2b-2 ss-1 3b-1 lf-2 cf-2 rf-3
current team with good defensive balance
ERA 3.64 WHIP 1.20
I'm by no means an expert, but I'm starting to consistently have good teams with this overall approach. I dont feel 1's up the middle are all that neccesary. However I dont like to have anything more than a 2. 1b, LF and RF are the only places I will give on fielding in favor of a strong bat. I also like to have a strong 3b which is not a consensus among SOM vets.
Here's the team I was talking about.
