How To Bat This Lineup?

I'm in Griffith, with a Dodgers 65, Candlestick, and Baker as the other parks in my division.

C: Carter
1B: Merkle
2B: Bishop
3B: Weaver
SS: O Smith
LF: Keller
CF: Speaker
RF: Rice

I would bat them this way: (LHP/RHP)

Ozzie/Ozzie
Rice (Sam Rice?)/Rice
Speaker/Keller
Carter/Speaker
Keller/Merkle
Merkle/Carter
Weaver/Weaver
Bishop/Bishop

I've only used Griffith one other time, and am not sure about this club. I'm probably gonna tinker some more.

FWIW, I'd go this route:

Rice
Speaker
Keller
Carter
Merkle
Weaver
Ozzie
Bishop

Or something closer to that.

Reasoning is ...
Speaker is a great #2 hitter.
Rice does well at leadoff, though you could flip flop him and Ozzie vs. RHP's if you like.
Carter is your only power hitter, so he may as well bat 4th both ways. Merkle and Weaver have good clutch, so 5 & 6 are perfect for them.
Bishop must bat 8th.

I know the prevailing theory with Bishop is he should hit 8th. My problem with that is since he only walks, he almost never drives in runs. His primary offensive value then is to score runs resulting from his OBP. If he bats 8th, and cannot bat himself to 2nd or steal 2nd, you need a real hitter behind him to get him to score. The pitcher will not drive him in very often. By placing him 8th, IMO, you eliminate what little offensive value he has. I'm not by any means convinced of my argument, just wanted to get some thoughts. Any takers?

I would go with Ferris or Evers over Bishop in the 8 hole. they will produce more runs for you.

Three points.

Bishop is useful to leadoff in a bomber park. Because of his D and price I use him alot in this context -- but only in this context. I wouldn't bat him second because of his 20 gba's.

He should not be used elsewhere.

It seems nothing short of idiotic to bat him eighth.

In a bomber park his walks can form the basis for a three run homer. Who cares if he clogs up the basepaths if you score via homeruns. In a pitcher's park, he does clog the basepaths and is a liability because of this. In any event, his only significant offensive utility is to set the table by walking. Thus batting him eighth wastes what little offensive value he has. Definitely Evers is a better choice for the eighth slot in your park.

Bishop is a little more useful in a dh league.

Not surprisingly I find my argument utterly compelling. :roll:

Well I have him leading off on my deadball team... Amazing how he still manages to score only 1 run ber 10 at bats despite a very high OBP...

This has been an interesting discussion regarding Bishop. I finally decided to dump him for Ferris at 2B. I then dumped Merkle for Hernandez at 1B. Hopefully these moves upgraded this team.
