The player pool is VERY deep... you can put together a competitive team after the other 11 teams have drafted.
That said, if you are focused on certain types of players, there is certainly no guarantee that you'll get them. There are only a couple of SSs who will provide you with a lot of power; there aren't THAT many good hitting CFs with great arms, etc. etc.
It's easier to point out the deep positions... you can always find LFs and RFs, you can always find mid-ranged salary starting pitchers; you can always pick up a good cheap defensive SS or 2B. I never put any of those things near the top of my draft list. As Mr BBW said, QUALITY SS and 2B aren't common... Morgan, E. Collins, O. Smith, Yount, etc.
